The Alpha Touring Challenge has recently completed its 6th season, and there were some impressive stats and records achieved over the course of the season.
RACING FEATS
One of the most notable achievements came from Micah Hendricks, who won by an incredibly slim margin of -0.074 at Road Atlanta. This margin of victory is the slimmest in league history, surpassing the previous record of -0.188, held by James D Carr at Mosport during Season 5.
Wojciech Swirydowicz, a seasoned driver in the Alpha Touring Challenge, set a new record for most consecutive fastest laps with six. This doubles his previous record of three, which he set at the beginning of Season 4. Woj was also responsible for tying his Season 3 record of six race wins.
Wojciech Swirydowicz has surpassed Slugnificent for the most fastest laps ever, with a total of 20, four more than Slug currently holds.
Logan McKinzie, driver for Yellow Flag Motorsports, proved to be a consistent force on the track this season, finishing on the podium in each of the last 8 races and in 10 races total. McKinzie’s impressive streak is the primary reason he eked out the championship in the end.
Finally, the season finale at Mid-Ohio saw a crucial battle play out between Micah Hendricks and Logan McKinzie. If Hendricks had not run out of fuel and McKinzie had placed second in the race, the two drivers would have tied at 651 points at the end of the season. This would have resulted in a tiebreaker, with Hendricks ultimately being named the champion due to his higher number of race wins throughout the season.
BIG NUMBERS
Over the course of the 13 events held in Season 6, a total of 459 laps were run. Of those, the league raced around Rudskogen a total of 43 times, making it the track that was raced on the most.
Another interesting fact came from Laguna Seca, which saw the highest number of incidents in Season 6, with a staggering 475. This ranks as the 4th most dangerous race in league history. In fact, Laguna Seca has held the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 10th most dangerous races ever.
For the third consecutive season, no field sizes were less than 18 cars, with only 2 of the 13 races featuring less than 20 cars. This is a testament to the league’s commitment to providing competitive and challenging racing for all its participants.
Of the 80 race events held by the league to date, only one driver has started every single one – Logan McKinzie. McKinzie and Francois Shink are the only drivers who have recorded 3000+ laps, with the next closest driver, Slugnificent, recording 2499.
The league has seen 35 drivers complete a full 12-race season, with 21 of those drivers having participated in two or more seasons. A grand total of 157 drivers have attended at least one race.
Another notable aspect of Season 6 was the record-breaking number of car swaps. Over the course of the season, a total of 21 drivers swapped cars, adding an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to each race. This high number of car swaps highlights the adaptability and flexibility of the drivers, who were able to quickly adjust to new vehicles and still compete at a high level.
Finally, it’s worth noting that Season 6 tied Season 3 for the longest season ever, both lasting exactly 105 days. Despite this, the level of competition remained high throughout.
As the season comes to a close, fans are already looking forward to next year’s Alpha Touring Challenge, eager to see what exciting moments and impressive accomplishments the drivers will bring to the track.
